In Matt Burton – and Phil Gould

Barrett’s power was being questioned after football manager Gould’s impromptu cameo with the clipboard. Barrett made a point of watching the game from the sideline, as if to remind the fans he remained the man in charge. Gould was in the coach’s box.

Barrett does not need reminding how lucky he is to have a player like Burton at the club.

Addo-Carr scored an excellent 85m intercept try after latching on to a looping Sam Walker pass meant for Suaalii.

Who knows what is going on with the Roosters and their attack. They were not much better than what they dished up five days earlier when losing to the Dragons on Anzac Day.

The talk was that Luke Keary needed to stand up and take charge of the attack. There were already too many instinctive players at Bondi, and it was time for their No.7 to be a genuine organiser.

Two of their three tries were dubious. Angus Crichton knocked the ball on before James Tedesco scored, and Keary fired a pass that appeared forward before Sitili Tupouniua scored late in the second half.

The club are down on confidence that they even made a mess of their captain’s challenge over a Jared Waerea-Hargreaves knock-on; replays showed he had, not once but twice.

The Roosters will be there come September, but they have a lot of work to do.

Despite Suaalii being denied late, he did channel a young Israel Folau when he leapt high to score the Roosters first try just before half-time.

Addo-Carr was no match for Suaalii, who plucked a Keary kick out of the air before juggling the ball and planting it down.

The Roosters were facing a second straight week where they had failed to register a point by half-time.

Radley and Tevita Pangai jnr looked ready to tee off at any stage, just as Radley did at the SCG last year when Pangai was with Brisbane.

Pangai has been mostly on his best behaviour this season, but he conceded a silly penalty when he shoved over Adam Keighran at dummy-half, then later jogged back into the defensive line to find himself the target of a Keary pass that broke down play.
