The house at 13 Clarkmont Rd, Sassafras, named Bulimba, was previously part of the Burnham Beeches estate (inset, upper right).

A house that was originally part of Burnham Beeches and hosted the famous estate’s guests is looking for a new owner keen to put down roots in one of the Yarra Ranges’ oldest homes.

Named Bulimba, the circa-1870 house at 13 Clarkmont Rd, Sassafraspredates Burnham Beeches, a Sherbrooke mansion built in the 1930s for Aspro sales magnate Alfred Nicholas.

Bulimba is surrounded by 6071sq m of spectacular gardens designed and planted by Percival Trevaskis, who was engaged to create Burnham Beeches’ gardens.

The property features a French door entrance opening to a library, leadlight and picture windows and ceiling roses.

The home’s owner said Bulimba was formerly used as quarters for Burnham Beeches staff, along with other Clarkmont Rd properties.

“At various times the house was used by Burnham Beeches as an overflow for guests with poetry readings and art retreats, for a time there was a resident artist,” she said.

“The original bridle trail for Burnham Beeches went around the property and can be seen by the line of trees still there.”

The house boasts several period features.

The owner, who is downsizing, said she had tried to maintain the garden’s original structure and plants as much as possible including the “very old hydrangeas, camellias and roses”.

She said peacocks often visited the bullnose veranda and children loved feeding the local parrots.

An in-ground pool behind a picket fence, fire pit, gazebo, chicken coop, greenhouse, cubby house and garden studio complete the list of outdoor attractions.
