If you think there’s plenty of time before the spring racing season kicks off in Cairns, think again with many fashion contestants already planning their outfit, as we take a look through history.
IF YOU think there’s plenty of time before the spring racing season kicks off in Cairns, think again, as a local race wear designer reveals how seriously fashions on the field contestants are already taking the competition.
The Cairns Cup Carnival is scheduled to begin on August 20, but hat designer Kelly Hill, of Kelly Louise Designs, said she was already fielding orders for racing events later in the year.
“A lot of people are putting a lot more effort into pre-planning now, often months in advance,” she said.
“I’ve already got orders for the Melbourne Cup Day events.”
Ms Hill said the trackside fashion was always evolving and had come a long way, even in the past five years.
“Those that are serious aren’t just going to the shops and picking up figure-hugging dresses anymore,” she said.
“They’re getting dresses made so they know they have something different.
“We’re seeing more elegance, longer hem lines, more shapes in the dress and the sleeves, and lots of bold colours.
“With hats, it’s Dior-shape headwear, the broad brim styles.”
